US and European material grade references
Working from an AISI, SAE, UNS, EN AW or European material-number drawing? Find the relevant naming reference below, then send the complete specification. This guide covers all nine numbered grades in our enquiry examples, with additional titanium, Inconel, copper-alloy and plastics references.
Published comparisons support an engineering review. They do not automatically authorize substitution or establish material availability. Grade, chemistry, condition, product standard and certificate requirements must match the approved order.
Carbon and alloy steels
The EN names below are common in Indian enquiries. US and European comparisons help identify the material for review; chemistry and treatment requirements still govern the order.
| Grade / material | US / international name | European designation | Include in your enquiry |
|---|---|---|---|
| EN8 / 080M40 | SAE / AISI 1040 (comparison) | C40 (comparison) | Confirm carbon range, supply condition and final hardness. |

Aluminium alloys
The alloy number is retained in European EN AW naming. Temper and product form must also match: an alloy number alone does not define the supplied material.
| Grade / material | US / international name | European designation | Include in your enquiry |
|---|---|---|---|
| Aluminium 6061 | AA 6061 | EN AW-6061 | Include the specified temper, product form and governing standard. |

Send the grade written on your drawing
You can enquire using the US or European designation directly. Include the stock form, condition or temper, quantity, finish and material certificate requirements. Any proposed alternate grade is reviewed and agreed before manufacture.
Discuss your material requirement →Aluminium
Aluminium is used for machined structures, housings, fixtures and lighter components. Typical enquiry grades include 6061, 6082 and 7075. Specify temper, finish, mating features and any dimensions that apply after anodizing.
Stainless, carbon and alloy steels
Requirements can include stainless grades such as 304, 316 and 410, or steels such as EN8, EN19 and EN24. Grade, supply condition and required final hardness should be explicit. Heat treatment, weld requirements and distortion-sensitive features affect the process route.
Brass, bronze, copper and other non-ferrous metals
Brass, bronze and copper enquiries are welcome. Specify the alloy, stock form and required properties rather than a general metal name. Thin features, burr control, finished surfaces and any plating requirements should be reviewed with the component.
Engineering plastics
Acetal, nylon and PTFE enquiries are reviewed for the application and drawing. Include the exact grade, temperature or chemical exposure where relevant, mating fits and how the part will be inspected or accepted.
Titanium and Inconel enquiries
Titanium and nickel-alloy / Inconel component enquiries are reviewed against the drawing. For titanium coil or other stock forms, state the exact grade, thickness or section, condition and quantity. For Inconel, include the alloy designation and required material specification. Specific grades, sourcing, machining route and certificates are confirmed with the quotation.
Sourcing and records
Grade examples are enquiry references, not a stock list. Material availability and substitution require agreement. State whether stock is buyer-supplied and whether certificates, heat/lot traceability or additional testing are required, so they are included in the quotation.
Questions from buyers
What is the US equivalent of EN24 steel?
AISI 4340 is a commonly published comparison for EN24; 34CrNiMo6 is a European comparison. These references help identify an enquiry, but the drawing standard, chemistry, heat treatment, mechanical properties and material certificate must be checked before substitution.
How do aluminium 6061, 6082 and 7075 appear on European drawings?
European drawings can use EN AW-6061, EN AW-6082 and EN AW-7075. Include the full product standard and temper as well as the alloy number. 6082 and 6061 are different alloys and must not be substituted simply because the drawing comes from a different country.
Can I enquire using a UNS or European material number?
Yes. Send the designation on your drawing, such as a UNS code or an EN / Werkstoff material number, with the product form, condition, quantity and certificate requirements. Sourcing and manufacturing suitability are reviewed for the exact specification.
Are the titanium, Inconel and copper-alloy references a stock list?
No. These are naming examples for enquiry review. The material families can be discussed, but specific grade availability, stock form, condition, certificates and lead time are confirmed with the quotation.
Can you source every listed material grade immediately?
Availability, stock form, condition, certificates and lead time are confirmed with the quotation. Send the exact grade on your drawing, including any US or European specification; the examples on this page are not a live stock list.
